In this episode, Kristin and Aaron talk about automotive design and branding. A question from a fan prompted our look at the way automotive companies and their designers use elements of the car to create a brand. There’s a reason why you always know a Dodge when you see the tail lamps, always know a Nissan when it’s coming towards you, and can always tell a Volkswagen from its side profile. These and many other examples are used to show how it’s done.
In this episode, Kristin interviews Gary Mack, part of the design team at Cadillac. They look at the new three-row XT6 crossover and talk about its design elements and comfort features for family driving. Whatever “family” means to you, the XT6 can probably accommodate. The focus of this interview is on women, who make up about half of all Cadillac buyers now.
In this fan question, I’m asked about automotive core design teams. Who are the key players in a design team for a new vehicle and how do they all coordinate? I give a design process overview and list the people who’re usually involved.
